r začíná ve třicátých letech 19. století.,kdy se dívka dostává z rodiny své zlé tety, kde po smrti rodičů žila, do internátní školy v Lowoodu. Příliš si však nepomohla. Ve škole musí snášet veškeré ústrky od vychovatelů. Přestože jsou ostatní dívky nabádáni k tomu ,aby se Jane stranili. Sblíží se Jane s Helen, která spí na vedlejší posteli.
